We went for another ride on the train today. This time Marty's parents rode with us. It was a very nice, very enjoyable ride today up until we were just pulling into the train station and a car ran into the train!!! And if that's not shocking enough... the car hit the train RIGHT under where Samantha was standing up in the seat and watching out the window! She was the only person in our section that saw it coming, and saw the whole thing happen. Fortunately, no one was injured (tho I am sure the driver of the car is a bit shaken up). Since we were just pulling into the station we (the grownups) weren't really paying attention to what was outside of the train and were just chatting amongst ourselves. Lexi was sitting in the seat beside me at that moment. All of the sudden we heard someone yell loud and in that moment Marty and I both looked up just in time to just catch a glimpse of the top of the station wagon running into the train. Pow! The train continued to move for I don't know about 40 feet or so and then came to a stop. Luckily the train was moving slowly anyway because we were approaching the station. When the car hit the train the train did jerk a little but no more so than when it takes off, so we weren't even thrown off balance. I grabbed Samantha and sat her down with me, facing the other way, until we found out that no one was hurt. Didn't want her having nightmares or anything. The rest of the afternoon was spent writing down information, talking with people, and waiting to get off the train. The story that we heard is that the brakes in the car failed and he was unable to stop. If that is true then I think he was awfully lucky that it was not worse. In any case, Samantha and Lexi got to see a firetruck, an ambulance, another fire vehicle, a sheriff's deputy, and about 5 highway patrol cars all up close and personal today. And we spent a lot of time answering questions from her this evening. All in all, an interesting and eventful day!
