This is the day we left the mountains just after lunch and headed home. We did stop by the NC Mineral Museum on our way since we pass right by it and the girls have been "mining" twice this year. The girls were not old enough to get a whole lot out of it, but they still seemed to have fun. They very much liked seeing some of the gems that they had mined, all polished, and they also seemed interested in the layers of the earth and where lava came from for some reason. At the store there, we let them pick out 4 stones and a bag ($5 each) - an old man was standing there watching them and struck up a conversation with us. When we counted out the gems, Lexi had 6 and had to put 2 back, and Sami had her 4. The old man gave them each a $1 bill and told them to pick out one more each - Sami and Lexi were appropriately appreciative to him. I bought bracelet one of the stones for myself too.
